Ryan Chambers
President, North Carolina NENA Account Executive, Mindbase |
Ryan Chambers has 16 years of Public Safety Experience as an Emergency Communication Specialist, CTO, and Fire Captain. After many years under the headset, Ryan took his passion for training to the Denise Amber Lee Foundation as he joined Nathan Lee’s mission to educate and motivate public safety. After traveling to 47 states and teaching 1000’s of dispatchers, Ryan was awarded with the 2018 and 2023 National NENA president’s award and the 2018 Texas APCO president’s award for influence and contributions to the industry. Today, Ryan still presents training with the Denise Amber Lee Foundation while also serving while also serving as NC NENA President and member of the NC NENA Wellness Committee and Peer Support Team. Ryan also holds the role of Account Executive with Mindbase - Proactive Mental Health.
Session: Mental Health - How Peer Support is never ending
Utilizing the personal tragedy of the loss of his wife, Ryan Chambers will speak on the impact and importance of building peer support well before a critical incident. Peer support has always had a stigma and lack of efficiency, as agencies let peer support teams sit stagnant with very little action or request to “activate”. The misunderstanding of peer support, as a team who responds “after” an incident is debunked as Ryan speaks through the days of February 2018 as his local agency and neighboring friends launch a massive support system for not only Ryan and his family, but for the agencies involved in the incident. |
Adam Timm
Author President & Founder of The Healthy Dispatcher |
Adam Timm began his 20-year career in public safety as a 9-1-1 dispatcher for Los Angeles Police Department Communications Division, where he spent over a decade under the headset. After leaving LAPD, Adam started his training and consulting company, The Healthy Dispatcher, to bring tools for resilience to this challenging profession. He's the author of three books, including the popular, "Dispatcher Stress: 50 Lessons on Beating the Burnout,” and his most recent, “People Driven Leadership: How the Best 9-1-1 Centers Inspire Positive Change.”
Session: The Power of Resilience
Working in 9-1-1 requires expending emotional labor each shift, while being exposed to the suffering of others. Over the life of a career in 9-1-1, experiencing compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burnout is common. When equipped with the proper tools and outlook, it’s possible to work with these feelings and overcome them, while pursuing a profession filled with meaning and purpose. With the strategies and perspectives taught in this class, participants will be able to combat feelings of job-related burnout, curb their complacency, and continue making a difference in the lives of each caller. In this session, attendees will walk away with the understanding of the underlying causes of work-related chronic/traumatic stress, dramatically lower stress levels and manage burnout, limit their exposure to vicarious trauma and be able to maintain a healthy balance between work and home life. |
